How To Make: Faux Leather Earrings

How To Make: Faux Leather Earrings

In today’s craft, I (Lucy) am going to teach you how to make these super simplistic, yet chic faux leather earrings! These earrings are super fun and extremely easy to make and they only take a couple of minutes. They are simplistic and minimal, but they are so perfect for any occasion! I can even wear them to school. I have a TON of them (maybe a little too many..but you can never have too many earrings!) and I can almost always find a way to wear each of them. In this tutorial, I will show you each step in detail and in depth showing you all of my tips and tricks for creating something gorgeous! Now, enough blabber. Let’s get crafting!

SUPPLIES FOR THIS CRAFT:

  • Purple Cricut Cutting Mat (We linked the one you need at the bottom of this page) This is an affiliate link for your convenience (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission but it won’t cost you a penny more)!

  • Faux Leather of choice (We order our’s from Etsy!)

  • Blue Painters Tape

  • HTV Vinyl of choice

  • Two Needle-nose Pliers

  • 4 O-Rings (We get our’s at Micheals)

  • 2 Earring Hooks

  • Cricut Maker

  • Deep Cut Blade

  • Optional: Chain

  • Cricut Heat Press

STEP 1: Before you do what is in the picture above, I want you to know why we put the HTV vinyl on the back of the faux leather. This adds for extra strength, and it makes it cuter and cleaner. Cut you leather and HTV vinyl to size (We cut it the exact size of the leather) Next, get your Cricut Heat Press (With adult supervision) and press at 360 degrees for 30 seconds. Remember to press evenly the whole time. NOTE: When the you finished pressing, take off the plastic cover on the HTV glitter vinyl while it is still hot. WARNING: Have an adult do this part. We always read directions on the Cricut website to remind ourselves about temperature, time, pressure, and peel.

STEP 2: Here is an example of what the front and back of the leather looks like when we heat pressed it. Next, we cut the earrings out. Take out you Cricut Purple Mat and Painters Tape. We use the Purple Mat because it is more sticky. We found out that faux leather doesn’t like to stick super well to the other mats. Line up your leather and then, to help it stay even better, we used painters tape. Just tape all the edges and be sure to press everything down hard. Grab your Cricut Maker or Cricut Explorer Air 2 and set the mode to Genuine Leather. We like to use genuine leather because when we added the HTV vinyl, it doubled the thickness. So this way, the blade will cut deeper. Be sure to use a Deep Cut Blade when cutting as well. We use the Deep Cut Blade because it cuts deeper into the leather, coming out with a cleaner edge.

These are the colors we chose! This after they came out of the cutting process. Aren’t they cute!?

Opening the O-ring.jpg

STEP 3: Now for the assembling. Take both of your neetlenose pliers (One in each hand) and use them to grab onto your O-Ring like shown in the photo above. Next, twist each pliers opposite directions at the same time opening the O-Ring up. Don’t pull them apart, twist until the ring is opened. If you pull, them apart, it will weaken the ring causing it to not be able to close.

STEP 4: This is just simply putting another O-Ring onto the first one. We like to put a second one on because the earring hangs a little bit better and more freely. Open it up the same way you did the first on, then hold the first one with one pair of pliers. Hook the opened O-ring onto the one you are holding with the pliers.

STEP 5: Next we are going to attach the O-Rings to the earring. Do do this, hook the opened O-Ring from the previous step to the earring hole. Then, to close the ring, take both pliers (one in each hand) and twist back and forth until closed. Don’t push to hard because you don’t want to bend the ring too much. You know when you closed it completely when you hear it click.

STEP 6: Now, we are going to open up the earring hook. All you have to do is take both sets of pliers (One in each hand) and twist back and forth. Just like you did on the O-ring.

STEP 7: Now you are going to attach the hook to the earring! To do this step, just hook the hook onto the closed O-ring on the earring. Then, close the hook up by taking your pliers (one in each hand) and twisting back and forth until you hear the clicking noise signaling that it is closed. Basically, you are just doing the same thing over and over again.

Here is the finished set of faux leather earrings! (Above) They looks so cute and simple. These could easily be paired with a cute black dress with gold accents or even jeans and a flowy blouse.

We added some more bling to these earrings by adding a gold chain to the front of it. Here is one with a chain and one without. Which is your favorite? This is completely optional and they are cute with or without a chain.
